Charles Bury, longtime editor of the Sherbrooke Record newspaper and former chair of the Canadian Association of Journalists, died from advanced liver cancer at 67.
Charles Bury, longtime editor of the Sherbrooke Record newspaper and former chair of the Canadian Association of Journalists, died from advanced liver cancer at 67.
Bury ran the only daily English-language newspaper in the Eastern Townships, according to CBC Montreal.
“Bury never feared controversy, even making headlines just a few weeks ago for using marijuana in his Sherbrooke hospital room,” CBC reported, adding he used the drug to manage his anxiety over his illness.
Bury was at the founding meeting of the Centre for Investigative Journalism—the predecessor of the Canadian Association of Journalists—in 1978 and was also on the board of members when the organization changed its name in 1990. Bury retired from the board in 2007.
“It’s with deep sadness the Canadian Association of Journalists acknowledges the loss of a lion in journalism and someone who gave decades of his life to our organization—Charles Bury,” CAJ president Hugo Rodrigues said in a statement. “In the months ahead the board of directors will share some information on how we plan to honour Bury’s significant contribution to the CAJ.”
Correction: An earlier version of this article said the Sherbrooke Record was the only English-language newspaper in the Eastern Townships. In fact, it's the only daily English-language newspaper in the Eastern Townships.
