Niagara College journalism program in final year, to be replaced by multimedia storytelling
The market forces that present serious challenges to Canada’s newspaper industry have come home for Niagara College.
Faced with declining enrolment and fewer job prospects for graduates in newspapers, the decades-old journalism program will train its last class of students this fall.
Behind the scenes, the program is being revamped into a multimedia, multi-platform storytelling program that will include elements of journalism but will have a broader focus.
The exact format and syllabus are still being designed, says Charles Kopun, the journalism program co-ordinator at the college.
“We have one more cohort that is going through and then, hopefully, the new program starts in September 2020,” he said. “A lot of smart people at the college are working on this now. This is not an end of an era by any means.”
