Report saying Harper-Putin hockey match was being planned was wrong: The Star
Toronto Star public editor Kathy English's latest column addresses a front-page story from earlier this week that claimed Stephen Harper was planning on playing hockey against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, saying they got the story wrong. The Prime Minister's Office had issued a press release after the story ran that said this was the case.
The story ultimately came about due to some confusion, and off-the-record statements made. English writes:
Westhead now thinks that rather than writing that Harper was “making plans to play” he should have written that there had been early-stage discussions about his participation.
[node:ad]His story also needed make to make clear that the Star could not confirm with Harper or the ambassador what his sources had said.
