J-Source is hiring: Editor-in-Chief (part-time)
Job posting: Editor-in-Chief, J-Source.ca (part-time)
The Canadian Journalism Project, a collaboration of journalism schools and organizations currently led by the Canadian Journalism Foundation, seeks an Editor-in-Chief for J-Source.ca, a national online project that provides news, information, resources and commentary about events, issues and challenges in Canadian journalism. J-Source serves as a hub for journalists, journalism educators and members of the public who are interested in journalistic excellence, and its Editor-in-Chief leads a team of editors in ensuring the overall quality of the site. Since its establishment in 2007, the site has been principally funded by the Canadian Journalism Foundation, but, effective January 1, 2014, it will be housed in journalism schools and managed by a decentralized governance model.
The successful candidate will be a full-time, and preferably tenure-stream, professor at a participating journalism school. S/he will take over from Janice Neil, the current Editor-in-Chief, on July 1, 2013 (or as otherwise negotiated), for a one- to two-year term (negotiable) with the following specific responsibilities:
- Provide editorial oversight of the entire content of J-Source.ca, in collaboration with section editors
- Exercise final approval over all editorial content on the site
- Actively supervise the editorial duties of the full-time Associate Editor
- Anticipate upcoming editorial opportunities and ensure plans are in place; identify gaps in coverage
- Provide advice to section editors and oversight of contributing editors
- Lead, evaluate and ensure effectiveness of editorial team
- Seek legal advice on defamation risk, in consultation with the Executive Director and Chair, Canadian Journalism Foundation (until December 31, 2013) or the Publisher of the Canadian Journalism Project (thereafter).
The time requirement is an average of 10 hours per week. This time will be compensated as part or all of the Editor-in-Chief’s employer’s in-kind contribution to the Canadian Journalism Project.
Applications should not exceed 1 MB and should be directed to Chris Waddell, Chair of the Search Committee: chris_waddell@carleton.ca. Deadline: Friday, May 10, 2013.
