National Post names Anne Marie Owens as editor
Owens becomes the first female editor-in-chief of a Canadian national newspaper. She starts in her new role on June 9.
Anne Marie Owens is the new editor of the National Post.
When she assumes the role on June 9, Owens will become the first female editor-in-chief of a Canadian national newspaper.
“Anne Marie brings with her strong journalist skills and ethics, and a broad understanding of national issues,” said Lou Clancy, senior vice-president of content at Postmedia Network, in a press release. “As a ‘day-oner’, she has a deep understanding of the Post’s mission and standards.”
Owens will return to the Post after three years as deputy editor of Maclean’s. She replaces Steve Meurice, who left the Post in March after 17 years with the newspaper.
Owens began her career at the St. Catharines Standard and was part of the original roster of reporters when the Post launched in 1998. She has held numerous other positions, such as news features editor, assistant managing editor and managing editor of news.
“Anne Marie is deeply grounded in the editorial DNA of the National Post,” said Gerry Nott, senior vice-president of the National Post. “Her time away has given her an even deeper insight into how to enhance what is truly a unique and compelling news product.”
Rogers has not named Owens' replacement as deputy editor at Maclean’s yet.
"Anne Marie is a talented editor and we wish her well in her new role. We will be conducting a search for the new Deputy Editor role at Maclean’s," Rogers spokesperson Louise Leger said in an email.
