The first issue of the Montreal Daily News was distributed on Mar. 15, 1988. Quebecor founder Pierre Péladeau and British tabloid publisher Robert Maxwell launched the daily English-language paper as a competitor to The Gazette. The paper introduced the first Sunday edition in the city. The last issue of the Daily News was published on Dec. 15, 1989, after Péladeau lost approximately $13 million in an attempt to break the monopoly of The Gazette.
