“Our total rewards compensation policy includes much more than simply a pay cheque and benefits program,” the broadcaster’s chief operating officer, Sky Bridges, told the Free Press. “It includes such things as a positive and supportive work environment that places a premium on employees and their personal growth and development.”
Employees receive subsidies for courses taken at outside institutions and for professional accreditation, are offered a formal mentoring program, as well as three weeks of paid vacation, in addition to personal days off. Also among the reasons that Mediacorp named the broadcaster as a top employer are its RSP matching plan and parental leave top-up payments for mothers, fathers and adoptive parents.
The not-for-profit national broadcaster’s headquarters are in Winnipeg, and also operate bureaus and offices in Vancouver, Yellowknife, Whitehorse, Iqaluit, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Ottawa, Halifax, Montreal and Toronto. The Free Press reports that of the 90 or so employees in Winnipeg, and 70 others at the regional bureaus, 66 per cent self-identify to be of Aboriginal ancestry.
