Metroland Media has partnered with Toronto-based Polar Mobile to launch more than 500 mobile apps for 104 community newspapers.

The apps will run on Apple, Google (Android), Microsoft and RIM platforms. Before the move, many community papers lacked the resources of their larger counterparts to create stand alone mobile apps.

As Polar Mobile CEO Kunal Gupta puts it in a press statement: "The local newspaper space is an untapped opportunity in mobile, as the content is exclusive and the advertiser needs are unique."

Currently, Polar Mobile powers over 1,00 mobile apps for more than 300 publishers, including Conde Nast, Rogers, and the Digital Journal.
