FOI Friday with Tom Cardoso

November 20, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join the Canadian Association of Journalists’ Ottawa chapter to learn how to improve your use of the federal Access to Information Act.

Tom Cardoso is a Toronto-based crime and justice reporter and data journalist for The Globe and Mail who specializes in finding stories in large datasets.

In October, he released a front-page investigation into systemic racism in federal prisons that found Indigenous and Black men were likelier than white men to receive worse risk scores, leading to reduced access to programming.

Cardoso was nominated for a 2018 Michener award for his reporting on white-collar crime, which identified hundreds of repeat-offenders taking advantage of Canada’s patchwork of securities regulators and uncovered more than $1.1-billion in unpaid fines.

In this online FOI Friday, Cardoso will walk through how to access databases through freedom-of-information requests, and what tools help him find stories of public interest.
