The Eyeopener Presents: Reforming Storytelling Equity Reporting Workshop
January 31 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
This event (hosted by The Eye and various other co-hosts!) will aim to rethink the way we approach storytelling and traditional journalistic approaches. We want to highlight non-journalist voices (aka, the people we aim to cover and represent), because sources are just as much part of the conversation as the actual storytellers! So please come out!
– Shree Paradkar, Toronto Star columnist and advocate for anti-oppressive education
– Deidre Olsen, The Pointer senior editor
– Sidney Drmay, independent freelancer and former Eyeopener editor
– Asmaa Malik, Ryerson School of Journalism associate professor
THE WORKSHOP: First we’ll have various short presentations of tips and new approaches when it comes to interviewing and telling the stories of traditionally misrepresented communities/individuals. Then we’ll break into groups where we’ll workshop our own new ideas/approaches and record them for future community use! We will be building these resources as a community to benefit and inform our future reporting.
The workshop will be followed by an anonymous Q&A session to touch on topics that were left out of the workshop.
NOTE: This workshop will focus on (but is not limited to) intersectional conversations around three important topics that campus and journalism at-large often get wrong: 1) reporting on issues faced by the Indigenous community, 2) anti-Black racism on campus and 3) reporting on trans/gender issues.
NOTE: Location will be in The Venn of the Rogers Communication Centre, which is wheelchair accessible. Please reach out to Sarah Krichel at firstname.lastname@example.org for any questions about accessibility or your personal accessibility needs!
