The National Newspaper Awards has announced its short list of nominees for 2014.

The Globe and Mail led this year’s list with 15 nominations total, followed by the Toronto Star at 11, La Presse at eight and the Canadian Press with five. Other multiple nominees include the Vancouver Sun, Ottawa Citizen and Moncton Times & Transcript with three each, and the Winnipeg Free Press, London Free Press, Halifax Chronicle Herald, National Post, and the Hamilton Spectator with two.

Of the 71 finalists nominated, the NNA’s news release notes, 34 are first-time nominees. Nearly 1,300 submissions of work published in 2014 had been considered in total.

Winners will be announced at the 66th National Newspaper Awards ceremony on May 22 at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto. La Presse’s Gabrielle Duchaine and Mike Strobel of the Toronto Sun are set to host the event.
