Eberts was born July 11, 1932 in Vancouver. He started at B.C. tabloid covering the New Westminster beat before moving on to general assignment. He eventually became the newspaper’s environmental reporter.

Eberts met his wife Dorothy Little, who also worked in the paper’s library at the time, when they both worked for the company, The Province said.
