After nearly five years at Montreal-based magazine Maisonneuve, editor-in-chief Drew Nelles is resigning.

Nelles joined Maisonneuve in 2008 as an intern and quickly rose through the ranks to become editor-in-chief. Under his watch, Maisonneuve won its second Magazine of the Year Award at the 2012 National Magazine Awards.

“I’m not moving to something specific […] I just decided it was time for a change and will be moving to New York,” Nelles told J-Source. “It’s a small magazine but I really think we’ve accomplished a lot and we just celebrated our 10th anniversary.”

The magazine published a job posting for Nelles’ job on Friday on its newly redesigned website.

The new website, designed by Cody Redmond and art director Anna Minzhulina, has more white space and is “more in line with the print magazine,” says Nelles. “We just wanted to make it simpler and cleaner,” Nelles said. “The old website was really clunky to use and it had too much on the home page.”

The English-language arts, culture and ideas mag ran into some financial difficulties in 2007 and downsized from a bi-monthly to a quarterly. Circulation was halved and the magazine operated without an office from for almost three years. Since then, its budget has stabilized.
