How journalism schools can be more equitable and inclusive

This video, presented by instructors Shenaz Kermalli and Brian Daly, walks you through how systemic inequities in Canada manifest in journalism methods and practices, and how that can play out in educational settings. It will empower you to review your current teaching materials and curriculum with an eye toward inclusion and representation by providing insight into the following:

  1. How to develop a better appreciation for how and why BIPOC students often feel excluded or unable to contribute in journalism classes.
  2. How to examine concrete ways to infuse inclusion and diversity into existing teaching practices and programs, including how to foster a safe community space where students learn actively from each other and draw from their own lived experiences and knowledge sources.
  3. How to learn about resources that support BIPOC journalists and help them grow in confidence.
