Kim Kierans is a professor and director
of the School of Journalism at the University of King’s College in
Halifax. She worked with CBC producer Dick Miller to produce the radio
documentary “Rising from the Ashes,” which was recently nominated for
a CAJ award in the Open Radio News/Current Affairs category. Kierans,
who is also an adjunct faculty member with the Konrad Adenauer Asian
Centre for Journalism at Ateneo de Manila University in the
Philippines, continues to write for the Halifax Sunday Herald
and CBC radio.  She wrote this First Person account, telling how she
and Miller wrote and produced the story of a community Filipino radio
station in Cagayan that is beating the odds of
