Reporters from across Canada are headed to Halifax for the second annual University of King’s College Summer School in Computer-Assisted Reporting.
The school is sponsored by the Canadian Newspaper Association and is the only “boot camp” style CAR training available in Canada. CAR skills give you a leg up in today’s brutal journalism job market by helping you get big stories everyone else will miss, stories such as CBC Reporter Jack Julian’s fascinating expose on parking enforcement in Halifax, the Michener-award winning coverage of Taser use, done jointly by CBC and the Canadian Press, and the (St. John’s) Telegram’s stories on drinking water safety.
There are still a few spots open for the summer school, which runs from June 22 to 26. To sign up, contact Kelly Goldenberg at 902-422-1271. You can pay using VISA, Mastercard or Amex. It costs just $475 for an entire week of training, or $350 for students and publications with a weekly or Saturday circulation of 30,000 of less. Comparable training can cost hundreds or thousands more, but we have kept the cost low so it is affordable for working reporters. The price includes a copy of Computer-Assisted Reporting: A Comprehensive Primer, from Oxford University Press, a $55 value.
You can also stay in residence at King’s for under $40 a night.
