The Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma, in association with the International News Safety Institute, will present “The War Within: The Plight of Mexican Journalists” on Friday evening, March 30th at 6:30 pm in the Upper Library at Massey College in Toronto.

A new study on the psychological health of Mexican journalists underscores the realities of day-to-day reporting in a country beset by a deadly drug war.

The Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma, in association with the International News Safety Institute, will present “The War Within: The Plight of Mexican Journalists” on Friday evening, March 30th at 6:30 pm in the Upper Library at Massey College in Toronto.

The University of Toronto’s Dr. Anthony Feinstein is world-renowned for his ground-breaking work on the effects of traumatic stress on international correspondents and was most recently featured in Under Fire: Journalists in Combat, a documentary short-listed this year for an Academy Award.  But his study on Mexican journalists is one of the first of its kind to focus on the emotional health of local journalists working in their own country.

In addition to Dr. Feinstein’s presentation, Brian Stewart, Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs, will moderate a roundtable on the dangers and consequences of working in a country where journalists are targeted with impunity.

Confirmed panelists include Luis Horacio Najera, exiled Mexican journalist living in Canada (and recipient of a 2010/2011 Scotiabank/CJFE Journalism Fellowship at Massey College); Michelle Shephard, the Toronto Star’s national security correspondent; and Rick MacInnes-Rae, host of Dispatches on CBC Radio One.  (Please note: Dispatches is also featuring a documentary on Mexican violence and the media the day before – Thursday, March 29th – at 1300, also available online or on podcast after the broadcast.

Admission to this event is free but seating is limited – check out the Forum’s website for full details and please RSVPno later than 23 March.
